3 Things You Should Know About Breast Reduction

The breast reduction procedure is more popular than people think it is. Overly large breasts are not always appreciated by the women who have them. There are many cases of celebrities who got big silicone implants only to have them removed a few years down the line because they couldn’t manage how much it changed their lifestyle.

It is no different for women with naturally big breasts. Big breasts can put a lot of pressure on the spine and even cause difficulties in breathing, not to mention physical discomfort when engaging in physical activities. There are also quite a few women active in sports that had to resort to breast reduction surgery to improve their performance on the field.

If you are considering breast reduction surgery to improve the quality of your life and to get a more aesthetic appearance of the body, here are three things you should know about how breast reduction is performed:

  1. Breast reduction is done with the patient under general anesthesia

At the beginning of the procedure, the plastic surgeon will mark the areas to be operated and the patient will receive general anesthesia. This type of anesthesia is preferred both by plastic surgeons and the patient as the procedure can be quite lengthy, especially if it is combined with liposuction on the back and the sides and there is a considerable amount of mammary gland tissue to be excised.

Nowadays general anesthesia is safer than ever, and many plastic surgery procedures use it. The patient will be advised not to drink or eat anything for at least six to eight hours before the procedure to avoid complications that can occur when under general anesthetic.

  1. Breast reduction entails multiple incisions

The procedure can be performed following different surgical plans. Depending on the amount of tissue to be removed, the incisions can be shorter or longer. An incision is made around the areola, another one can go in a vertical line from the areola’s edge towards the inframammary fold, and a third one can be positioned in the inframammary fold. Using these incisions, the plastic surgeon will remove the excess of mammary gland along with the subcutaneous fat tissue and skin envelope of the breasts. During the procedure, enlarged areolas will be remodeled to look more harmonious with the new size and shape of the breasts.

  1. The hospitalization period is no longer than a few hours

There are few cases when the hospitalization after breast reduction surgery is more than 24 hours. Usually, this happens for patients who had a complex procedure and the surgeon eliminated a significant quantity of tissue. These patients will need to stay in the medical facility for longer so the medical staff can monitor their recovery. For a vast majority of patients, the hospitalization is no longer than a few hours. After they wake up from the anesthetic, they can go home.
