Asymmetry after breast reduction

A breast reduction surgery might be needed by some women who have developed naturally large breasts or when the breasts tend to grow in size due to fat deposit. Other known causes are due to multiple pregnancies or aging, but in slightly smaller percentages. When these natural causes occur, they usually overdevelop during the pubertal breast-development stage, also known as thelarche. It is known that under no circumstances, both macromastia or gigantomastia do not respond to medical therapy, thus requiring an invasive procedure. Large breasts can create a lot of pressure on the neck, back, or shoulders. It can also lead to breast ptosis (sagging skin around breast area).

If we think about the procedure itself, the surgical technique is similar to a breast lift procedure. During a breast reduction surgery, your nipple along with the areola will be repositioned, if necessary, in order for the surgeon to achieve better results. In recent years, breast reduction procedures have achieved high satisfaction rates. Most complications involve wound healing but is a small negative aspect when we look at the bigger picture.

When we think about surgical asymmetry, this particular side effect occurs in less than 1% of cases. Asymmetry can be the result of nipple malposition or swelling. Asymmetries are to be expected after surgery since breasts are naturally asymmetric. For swelling, it is much better for you to wait few weeks to let it subside as swollen tissue will go back to normal. However, if the asymmetry is still noticeable after this period, a revision procedure should be taken into consideration. A small asymmetry which is barely noticeable can be easily repaired with liposuction or excision (tissue removal).

A good surgeon will try to minimize asymmetry as much as possible. More experience usually leads to better results. A good marking before the procedure is essential. Your surgeon will need to examine your breasts and also take detailed measurements. Also, another factor that should be taken into consideration is your skin quality. Skin elasticity plays an important role in getting optimal results. Be sure that you make the right choice when you finally decide over a surgeon or not. Ask for recommendations, see his portfolio, and ask for visible proof. Have a look at as many pictures involving his procedures to see different outcomes.

When you deal with asymmetry, try to have realistic expectations. A perfectly symmetrical shape is hard to obtain, and a tiny degree of asymmetry is not something to worry about. Even so, a revision will deal with it immediately. Speak with your surgeon beforehand and set realistic expectations. Each case is different and in the end, be sure that your surgeon will do his best to avoid any unpleasant side effects or complications. Nothing is perfect, but usually experience and improvement lead to almost perfect results.
