Breast reduction surgery provides a way for women who have overly large breasts to have it reshaped into a smaller one. To do this, the excess fat, tissue and skin will be removed from their breasts. Most people assume that the bigger the breasts, the better it is, but this is actually not always the case. While it may come surprising to some, there are many who go for a breast reduction for health reasons. Those who have large breasts can feel pain and discomfort because of the sheer weight of the breast. Having said that, there are some people who have breast reduction surgery to improve their appearance, mainly due to asymmetries.
Those who are bothered by the large size of their breasts can choose to undergo a breast reduction. Generally, you are a good candidate for this procedure if the size of your breasts is not really proportionate to the size of your frame. Furthermore, severely large breasts really put a strain on your body, especially if you have are petite and have a small frame. It can lead to discomfort or pain at the back or neck area.
Doctors may ask you to try other less invasive methods, such as wearing wide strap bras for a year or undergoing physical therapy before surgery. When all these fail to alleviate your discomfort, then it would be best for you to proceed with the breast reduction procedure.
On the other hand, there are also some women who undergo the breast reduction procedure because their breasts are highly asymmetrical. Breast asymmetry is very common in women, and is fortunately not noticeable. Even so, if yours is really disproportionate, then perhaps surgical solution is the only effective option for you.
Before that though, if you decide to go through the breast reduction surgery, you should be in good health. The patient shouldn’t be in the middle of a diet and should make sure that their body receives the right amount of nutrition so that the body can withstand the operation. Proper nutrition is important to the recuperation period after the surgery.
It should also be noted that the procedure aims to improve the current condition, but it is not a perfect solution to the problem. Those with asymmetrical breasts may still end up having some asymmetry, but the good thing is that it will be a huge improvement to the pre-surgical one.
Those who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have just stopped breastfeeding are not good candidates for the surgical procedure. It is also not advised for those who are severely obese, have a clotting disorder, or any severe illnesses or infections. Moreover, smokers are strongly advised against having surgery, unless they quit a few months before and after the surgery. All of these may negatively affect the results, which is why it is important to heed your surgeon’s advice.
If you think you are a good candidate for the breast reduction procedure and if you have already decided to go through it, then you should seek a certified surgeon to do it for you. Experienced and board-certified surgeons will be able to see if you are really a good candidate for the breast reduction surgery. They may also suggest a better alternative, depending on what your current condition is and what you really want to get from the procedure. It is imperative to be comfortable with your surgeon so that you can tell them exactly what you expect from the procedure. They will also be able to shed some light on what the procedure will really do to your breast and other risks that are involved.
