Breast reduction surgery is performed to reduce the volume of overly large breasts and improve their shape. The procedure is recommended for women of all ages who are dealing with uncomfortable side effects of having breasts that are too large for their body frame.
Breast reduction surgery should only be performed on patients who have fully developed breasts and only if the patient has understood and accepted the risks and potential complications associated with undergoing this intervention. Also, the surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with plenty of experience in this specific procedure.
Immediately after surgery, the patient will notice that the breast size has decreased and many of the side effects associated with overly large breasts have disappeared. However, the final results will transpire in time, and it can take up to one year to be able to properly assess the outcomes in terms of the aesthetic appearance of the breasts.
Just like many other surgical interventions performed for aesthetic purposes, the success of breast reduction surgery is not decided when the procedure is over. After the intervention, the patient will go through a recovery process, after which we can evaluate the results achieved with the procedure. In other words, the relationship with the plastic surgeon doesn’t end after you leave the medical facility but one year later, when the final results are visible.
The patient is advised to schedule follow-up consultations with the plastic surgeon the week after the procedure, one month after, and then after three months, six months and a year. Many patients wonder why the follow-up is important and whether they really need to meet the plastic surgeon again or just go through the recovery process alone.
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that can entail risks and complications, especially if the patient has underlying health conditions, is prone to bad scarring, or a considerable amount of tissue was removed during the intervention. This means that complications can occur after the procedure. Common complications that are associated with any other type of surgical intervention such as infection, excessive bleeding, seroma, and hematoma can occur in the days following the procedure or later on. This is the reason why it is necessary to see your plastic surgeon the week after the procedure. During this consultation, the plastic surgeon will check how the recovery process is going and if there are any signs of a potential complication.
If you go to the follow-up consultation, you allow the plastic surgeon to monitor your recovery process and even prevent a complication that can occur. Also, considering the fact that breast reduction surgery can leave behind significant scarring, it is important to let the plastic surgeon evaluate the cicatrization process as well. If the patient has the tendency to develop abnormal scarring, the plastic surgeon can intervene and correct the condition.
