A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess fat, tissue and skin to make the breasts smaller. The goal is to make the breasts proportionate to the patient’s body frame. It is also possible to combine liposuction with this procedure if the size of the breast is caused by excess amount of fat. Having said that, there are different techniques to choose from and this will depend on the patient’s current condition and how the surgeon’s skills.
Regardless of the technique used, it all starts with the administration of anesthesia. This procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, but it is also possible for your surgeon to choose local anesthesia coupled with sedation if the operation will only be minimal.
The next step is to make the incision. The type of incision used also varies depending on the patient’s condition. A circular incision around the areola will leave less scarring, but it is only used if the patient only requires minimal breast reduction. For some, this is considered as a breast lift because it also lifts the breast upward and prevents it from sagging. Another incision is what they call the keyhole incision in which an incision is made around the nipple and another one from the first incision down to the breast crease. This gives the surgeons better access to the breast. Lastly, there is also the inverted T or anchor-shaped incision, which is usually used for those who have a lot of excess skin, tissue, and fat to be removed.
After the incision, the excess tissues, fat and skin will be removed. In this procedure, surgeons can choose to re-position the nipples and areola to a better location, if necessary. It is also possible to reduce the size of the areola to make the breasts look better. The reduction is then done along with a lift, so that the breast is properly shaped and positioned.
As soon as the surgeon is happy with the shaping and lifting, the incision will be closed and sutured together. The sutures made are not just on the skin, but on the underlying breast tissues as well. Of course, scarring is inevitable, but the severity of the scars also depends on how well the patient cares for the incision. There are also some products available in the market that can be used to minimize the scarring.
You can already expect to see the results immediately after the surgery. Even with the swelling, the reduction will be obvious. Aside from swelling, you may also see bruising on your breasts. Not to worry, this is perfectly normal.
Furthermore, your surgeon may also place drainage tubes to prevent the accumulation of fluid in your incision site as you heal. Naturally, there will be pain, which is why your surgeon will prescribe pain medication that you should take regularly to help you feel more comfortable as you heal.
Like all other surgeries, a breast reduction surgery comes with risks. Among these risks are allergic reactions to anesthesia, clot formation, change in breast sensation, necrosis, inability to breastfeed and many others. It is important to think about the operation and consider the risks first before deciding to go for it. Despite all that, most of these risks are rare or preventable provided that you follow your surgeon’s instructions.
