One breast is healing slower than the other after breast reduction

If your breasts are overly developed and the condition is affecting your self-esteem or creating physical discomfort for you, you may consider breast reduction surgery. Breast reduction surgery is an effective plastic surgery procedure that can reduce the size of your breasts, making them aesthetically welcoming and eliminating your physical and emotional discomfort.

Some patients may feel like one of their breasts is healing slower than the other after breast reduction surgery. This is normal and nothing to worry about. To understand why, you should know what the procedure actually entails.

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and is highly invasive. After administering the anesthesia, the plastic surgeon will make incisions on the breasts, after which he will remove the excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin from the breasts. The doctor will then re-drape the remaining skin and suture and close the incisions. After the intervention, you will have to go through a complete recovery process.

During the recovery period, the incisions will heal and your breasts will recuperate from the surgical trauma. Primary recovery takes place during the first two weeks after surgery; however, complete recovery will take six weeks.

For most patients, both breasts heal alike and at the same time. However, some patients may note that one of the breasts is healing faster than the other. Many patients who notice this panic. However, the fact is that this is a normal condition and you should not worry about it. Keep in mind that the surgery has been performed on both breasts, and it is possible that there will be some difference in the pattern and speed at which they heal.

You may notice that one incision is healing slowly than the other. This is a natural phenomenon. However, when you feel other signs like excessive swelling, prolonged or intense pain, pus discharge, or other abnormal signs in the breast that is healing slowly, you must contact your plastic surgeon because it might be a sign of an underlying complication like an infection.

Since the breast reduction procedure is highly invasive and traumatic, it will take time for the breasts to recuperate completely. The results of the surgery will not be visible completely unless and until the post-operative swelling has fully subsided and the breasts have fully healed.

It is also common to notice that one of the breasts has reduced in size and become aesthetically appealing, whereas the other breast is healing slowly. This is also normal, and you shouldn’t be concerned because the breast that is healing slowly will also become equal in size and similar in shape to the breast that has healed faster and has shown the ultimate aesthetic outcomes. If you still feel uneasy and want to be sure everything is normal, you can see your plastic surgeon. The surgeon will examine your breasts and tell you what is causing the delay in the healing of the other breast.
