Painful incisions after breast reduction surgery

Breast reduction is a plastic surgery procedure that can effectively reduce the size of overly developed breasts. The procedure also reduces or eliminates the aesthetic and physical pain linked with having very large breasts. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and involves excision of the surplus fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts. Breast reduction surgery is more traumatic than other breast enhancement procedures.

It involves lengthy and more incisions. The incisions are used to remove the excess fat, skin, and tissue from the breasts. As such, you can expect to experience pain and discomfort in the breasts for the first few days following the intervention. The pain is limited to the incisions in most cases. The severity of the post-surgical pain depends on many factors, such as your pain tolerance level, the experience of the surgeon who performed the operation, and the post-surgical care.

In most cases, the pain is felt within the first 24-72 hours after the procedure. Normally, the pain should gradually fade thereafter. The plastic surgeon may recommend pain relief medications to cope with the pain. It is important to keep in mind that the patient may also experience other forms of pain after the surgery. As stated above, the common type of pain is limited to the incisions. It is a localized pain and does not go beyond the incisions.

Even though the pain is not intense in most cases, many patients may feel like the pain is uncontrollable. It can happen for two reasons. First, the patient may have a weaker pain tolerance level. Second, there might be an underlying complication like an infection that is causing the pain.

A painful incision can also happen when the plastic surgeon causes injury to the skin or the associated tissues. Interfering with the skin and tissue when making the incision can be traumatic and create pain on the incision after the procedure. Furthermore, if you are not careful during the recovery, you may experience incisional pain. For example, if you sleep on your front during the first two weeks after the surgery, it can apply pressure to the incisions, which can cause pain.

The pain in the incisions after breast reduction is superficial in most cases. As the incision heals, the pain will fade. You will feel better as time passes and the pain would ultimately disappear without any additional treatment. You can take oral painkillers to cope with the pain and discomfort. In my practice, I advise my patients to take oral pain medications for a few days after the surgery.

However, the pain may be worse or prolong in some cases, or it may disappear and then reappear. In such case, you must contact your plastic surgeon because it might be a sign of an infection or other complications. The post-operative swelling might also be the source of the painful incision. In any case, your plastic surgeon can help you normalize the pain.
