Purpose and procedure for breast reduction
Breast reduction is a procedure performed on women with overly large breasts to help them get rid of the symptoms associated with an excessive size and volume of the breasts. Breasts that are too large compared to the woman’s anatomy can trigger serious physical issues, as well as emotional ones, especially on teenagers. There are different causes for the overdevelopment of the breasts, but generally speaking, we are talking about a hormonal imbalance. This means that patients of different ages can be affected by this condition, including girls as young as 14 years old. When it comes to patients who are so young, the excessive development of the mammary gland is often associated with issues such as bullying and over-sexualization. The girl looks more mature than she actually is because of the size of her breasts. To alleviate the discomforts associated with a large volume of the breasts and also to increase functionality, breast reduction surgery is performed.
The purpose of breast reduction is to reduce the size of the breasts and to make them more proportionate to the rest of the patients’ anatomy. Generally speaking, most patients will want to get a C cup after the procedure. It is true that breast reduction doesn’t come without risks, but in a vast majority of cases, patients consider the risks to pale in comparison with the benefits they can achieve after the procedure.
Some common issues associated with overly large breasts are back, neck and shoulder pain, an abnormal body posture, dermatological conditions on the inframammary fold, and embarrassment in different situations when the volume of the breasts is a problem. Breast reduction is performed to sort these issues and to allow the woman to live a normal life afterwards.
The procedure entails a series of medical tests to be taken beforehand, such as blood tests and a breast echography or mammography, depending on the age of the patient. The tests are necessary to rule out potential contraindications to the procedure. General anesthesia is often preferred by patients as the patient feels no pain during the surgery and has no recollection of the surgical trauma. The plastic surgeon will perform incisions on the breasts to detach the skin envelope and get access to the glandular tissue. The excess of mammary gland tissue is removed, as well as the excess of skin. The nipple and areola complex are repositioned, and their dimensions are adjusted to fit in with the new appearance of the breasts. After the procedure, a compressive bra should be worn for a minimum of three weeks or according to the recommendations of the plastic surgeon. Patients are strongly advised not to smoke or sleep for the tummy for at least three weeks after surgery.
