SOFT TISSUE BOTTOM-OUT AFTER A BREAST REDUCTION

The breast reduction procedure should be performed under general anesthetic in a hospital or an  authorized medical clinic. The techniques used to reduce the mammary tissue can vary from one plastic surgeon to the other, depending on their personal preferences, experience, and skills. What usually happens is that the plastic surgeon makes an incision around the areola and removes excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue from the lower part of the breast. The nipple and areola will be transferred on a pedicle to preserve their sensitivity after the surgery.

After the surgery is performed, the breasts will be covered with bandages. The doctor will prescribe both anti-pain medication and antibiotics to reduce the risk of developing an infection. During the initial recovery period, the breasts will be sensitive to the touch and a bit painful. You may also have minor swelling and bruising after the surgery; it is natural and will disappear with time. To ensure you have a fast and uneventful recovery process, it is essential to minimize or completely eliminate all physical effort.

As the healing process progresses, you will feel pain in the breasts and on their sides, as well as numbness in the nipples. We have had some patients who experienced itchiness after the breast reduction procedure. This is proof that each body reacts differently to surgery, and the healing process varies from one patient to the other.

The scars after the breast reduction procedure are permanent, but they will fade with time. It can take weeks and even months for the patient to be fully satisfied with the results of the breast reduction surgery, although some benefits will be apparent as soon as they recover from the anesthetic, like the lack of burden and pressure on the back, shoulders, and neck. The final result is usually permanent after the breast reduction procedure, although the shape and size of the breasts can change further due to factors like aging and weight fluctuations.

It is also important to know that soft tissue drops with time. While the nipple position usually doesn’t change, the breasts can be subject to a bottom-out effect. The bottoming out of the soft tissue is dependent on how much breast tissue there is and how heavy the breasts are.

Studies show that the breast reduction technique used when performing the surgery can also have an impact on the soft tissue bottom-out.

Aside from these, there are other factors that can influence the soft tissue bottom-out after a breast reduction:

  • Giving birth to children after the procedure was performed
  • Gaining or losing weight
  • The quality of your skin
  • Hormonal changes that can occur over time
