Macromastia and gigantomastia are rare conditions in women characterized by abnormal breast growth. This creates significant pain and discomfort like breast pain, backache, neck pain, ulceration and infection, posture problems and even loss of nipple sensation due to nerve injury. Aside from the physical discomfort, having excessively large breasts can be emotionally and psychologically distressing for many women. It can lead to poor self-image, decreased self-esteem, which consequently affects quality of life.
Given the numerous problems associated with overly large breasts, it follows that women with this rare condition would like to decrease the size of their breasts to fit their body proportions and make it look shapelier, perkier and more natural. Breast reduction surgery is the only surgical option available that can effectually address this abnormality. Non-surgical options promises a lot, but can do very little or nothing to relieve the patient. It bears pointing out that if the issues of excessively large breasts are not properly treated as soon as possible, time and gravity will exacerbate sagginess and droopiness.
The breast reduction surgery treats the condition by removing excess fat, skin and glandular tissues. This leads to marked decrease in the size of the breasts. The surgery is performed as an outpatient under general anesthesia. Since it is a surgical procedure that involves incisions on the breasts and excision of skin and tissue, it comes with accompanying risks and complications.
The technique used for this type of breast reduction requires several incisions and involves repositioning the nipple and removal of surplus tissue, fat and skin. The incisions are then sutured and bandaged. Typically, the surgery lasts from 2-3 hours after which, patient can go home if vitals remains stable.
Studies have already established that the breast reduction surgery is very effective and delivers impressive results. Majority of the patients are satisfied with the results. After surgery, common pain and discomforts associated with breast hypertrophy are immediately removed. As bonus, patient gets the boost in self-confidence and self esteem, which can also translate into a new desire to actively engage in life and result in increased productivity in the patient’s professional life.
When it comes to breast reduction surgery, there are different techniques and approaches to go about it. The most common techniques are liposuction, vertical breast reduction and anchor breast reduction. The liposuction technique is the least invasive and involves the use of liposuction to remove fat cells from the breasts. This procedure is good for patients who only want to achieve minimal reduction in breast size.
The vertical technique is recommended for moderate reduction in breast size. It not only decreases breast size, but it also removes saggy skin. This technique uses two incisions: one around the areola’s end and another vertically down the center from the areola’s base to the infra-mammary crease. The vertical breast reduction technique creates a shapelier breast and improved longevity of the shape.
The traditional or anchor technique requires three incisions. The first incision is made around the areola. The second incision is vertically down the center of the breast to the breast fold and the third is a horizontal incision along the breast fold below the breast. If you are looking for a significant reduction in your breast size, this is the technique that can deliver the most impressive aesthetic results.
