Taking care of your breasts after breast reduction

Modern standards of beauty require women to have bigger breasts; however, some women who have overly large breasts desire to reduce their breast size. Overly large breasts look aesthetically unwelcoming and create physical pain like neck pain, backache, and shoulder pain for the patient. As such, women with overly large breasts look for ways to decrease the size of their breasts.

Breast reduction surgery effectively reduces the size of overly developed breasts. It involves excision of the extra fat, skin, and glandular tissue from the breasts. The procedure is traumatic, and the patient must undergo complete recovery after the surgery. It is important for the patient to take care of her breasts after the surgery. Carelessness will not only affect the achieved results but also create health problems.

During the recovery period, the patient must wear the support bra or a surgical bra as recommended by the plastic surgeon. You should avoid wearing your regular bras until the breasts have healed and recuperated after the surgery. Surgical bras are designed to expedite the healing process, reduce the swelling, and keep your newly contoured breasts intact.

It is also important for the patient to avoid physically strenuous activities and movements for six weeks after the surgery. Even though you may resume your work after two weeks, it is important to avoid activities and movements like stretching, jumping, weightlifting, exercising, and household chores for six weeks following the operation. These activities apply pressure to the breasts, which can result in wound opening, bleeding, and poor and slow wound healing.

Patients must take sufficient rest after the procedure. It is important for a smooth and safe recovery after the surgery. Taking rest provides your breasts the time to heal and recuperate from the surgical trauma. For two weeks after the surgery, you must take full rest. Of course, you can get up and take short and slow walks after every few hours during this time.

When it comes to sleeping after surgery, you must avoid sleeping on your front for two weeks. Sleeping on your front can apply pressure to the breasts, which may trigger incision opening. When the incisions open, it can lead to bleeding, slow healing, and even abnormal scarring.

During the recovery period, the patient must avoid smoking because it can slow down the healing process, lead to poor scarring, and trigger health problems like blood clotting. Also, you must avoid exposing your breasts to sunlight and other forms of direct heat for six months after the surgery because there is a risk abnormal scarring will happen. Be sure to cover your breasts when you go out.

After the surgery, your body will be exposed to possible infections. It is important to keep the incisions clean. Also, never touch the incisions or let any unsanitized person touch it. Be sure to keep your weight stable after the surgery because weight gain may make the breasts large again.
