The downtime after breast reduction
Women with overly large breasts can get release from the discomforts caused by the excessive weight and volume of the breasts after undergoing breast reduction. The procedure should only be performed by a talented and experienced board-certified plastic surgeon in a hospital or other accredited medical facility. It can take up to two or three hours to be performed, depending on the complexity of each case and whether it is combined with other procedures or not. Even if breast reduction is a very complex and difficult plastic surgery, the hospitalization time is no longer than a few hours after the patient makes a full recovery.
After being discharged from the medical facility, the patient can go home where the recommendation is to rest and take things slowly for the next couple of days. The downtime after breast reduction is one to two weeks, and again it depends on how complex was the procedure, the age of the patient, and other factors such as the occurrence of post-operative complications.
The downtime after breast reduction surgery can be longer for patients who had other procedures performed in with the breast reduction, such as liposuction or the tummy tuck. If this is the case, make sure to allow at least two weeks before returning to work.
The details of the downtime required after breast reduction will be discussed in detail with the plastic surgeon even during the initial consultation. It is important for the patient to be able to take time from work and the daily responsibilities after the surgery.
The first few days are associated with a more significant level of discomfort and even pain. This is why the plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medication that should be taken accordingly to the doctor’s orders. To avoid unnecessary pain during the first few days post-op, it would also be a good idea to avoid lifting the arms over the shoulders or lifting heavy objects from the floor. During the downtime, the patient is allowed to have showers but not baths, and only with the condition to keep the incisions clean and dry at all times.
Patients are advised to avoid lying on their front or stomach for at least two to three weeks after the procedure. This is to keep complications at bay as incisions can open due to the excessive pressure put on the breasts when lying on the front of the body.
