Breast reduction surgery is a major plastic surgery intervention that is used to reduce the size of overly large breasts. The surgery, which is performed under general anesthesia, involves removal of the surplus skin, fat, and glandular tissue from the breasts. Many patients ask whether they can undergo the intervention when they are having their menstrual cycle. Prior to the operation, the plastic surgeon will ask if you are having your period. It is important that you share the date of your menstrual cycle with the plastic surgeon.
In most cases, breast reduction is an elective intervention. Elative procedures are normally not performed at a time when the patient is having their menstrual cycle. However, if the menses occurs during the surgery, it will not affect the results or create health problems.
Why breast reduction is not recommended during the menstrual cycle is purely for your comfort during and after the surgery. Furthermore, the bleeding due to the surgery, combined with the menstrual bleeding, may create some sickness and discomfort for you during the recovery period.
In my practice, I prefer to perform all elective procedures after the menstrual cycle. But some plastic surgeons still perform the surgery even when the patient is having their menses. Whether your surgery will be performed during your period depends on the plastic surgeon’s preference. If you have chosen a board-certified plastic surgeon to perform the operation, you will not experience much loss of blood during the surgery. What this means is that in such a case, undergoing breast reduction surgery at the time of your period may not be uncomfortable for you.
The doctor will also assess your overall health condition and ask you if you are using certain medications in light of your menstrual cycle. If you have diabetes or are using medicines like aspirin, you may experience bleeding during and after surgery. In this case, you should postpone your surgery until your menstrual cycle ends. Also, if you are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pills, you may experience more bruising. This can make the recovery uncomfortable for you if you are having your menstrual cycle.
Many patients have a low tolerance for pain. After the surgery, you may feel pain in the breasts. If it is combined with menstrual pain, you may feel uncomfortable. If you have a lower pain tolerance level, you should not undergo breast reduction surgery at the time of your menses. Moreover, if you are using anti-inflammatory medicines, the bruising after breast reduction will be more. In such a case, menses can make your experience worse.
After breast reduction surgery, the patient is required to go through a complete recovery process. The recovery period can be uncomfortable for many patients. When you are having your menses during the recovery period, the discomforts will increase. To have a smooth and comfortable recovery, you should undergo the breast reduction surgery after your menstrual cycle.
