Breast reduction surgery is recommended for women of different ages that are confronted with unwanted, overly large breasts. Many women with breasts too big for their anatomy suffer from back, neck and shoulder pain due to the pressure put on the spine by the weight of the breasts. Dermatological conditions can also occur on the inframammary fold due to the lack of air flow in the area and the constant rubbing of the breast tissues against the skin of the thorax.
The breast reduction procedure can be performed on a patient only after the development of the mammary gland is complete. This means that even patients as young as 16 years old can undergo the procedure. The intervention is safe, usually performed under general anesthesia, and the hospitalization is no longer than 24 hours. However, when undergoing a complex intervention such as breast reduction at a young age, there are special considerations you need to be aware of.
Among these important considerations, we need to mention weight fluctuations and the results of the breast reduction. Even if the procedure is performed with spectacular results, ulterior events that impact the weight of the patient could change or alter the outcomes of the initial intervention. Many patients wonder what will happen if they lose weight after breast reduction surgery.
A responsible plastic surgeon will always advise you first to reach your ideal weight and only then to undergo a plastic surgery procedure. But this is not always possible. If the patient needs the breast reduction surgery to alleviate significant discomfort or severe and constant pain, the procedure can be performed even on obese or overweight patients. However, you need to keep in mind that once you lose weight (it can be as little as 2 kgs), the aesthetic results of your procedure can be negatively impacted.
So what happens to the breasts when we lose weight? The breasts can become saggy; they might look deflated and lack upper pole fullness. Weight fluctuation is one of the causes of breast ptosis, so don’t be surprised to see your nipples facing down after undergoing a significant weight loss process. Of course, each patient is different and bodies respond differently to weight loss. Young patients with a good skin quality can notice that weight loss leaves no effect on the breasts, while others will be surprised to see that the breasts are even more affected by the weight loss than the tummy and the thighs. How our body changes after weight loss can be a genetic inheritance, so have a look at the women in your family to be able to estimate how weight loss can impact the results of your breast reduction surgery.
The important thing to keep in mind is that even if your results have been altered, additional surgical interventions can be performed to correct this issue.
