What to do when bleeding occurs after breast reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a major operation that is used to reduce the size of overly large breasts. Many factors trigger the development of overly large breasts, such as genetics and weight gain. When the breasts become extremely large, they not only look aesthetically unwelcoming but also create physical pain and discomfort for the patient. Shoulder pain, headache, neck pain, and backache are associated with overly large breasts. To get rid of the condition, the patient is recommended to undergo the breast reduction procedure.

Breast reduction is a highly invasive intervention. It involves incisions and surgical trauma. It also involves removal of the excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts. As such, there are many risks associated with the intervention. One of the major risks after surgery is bleeding.

During the recovery period, there is a risk bleeding may happen. Certain factors can cause bleeding after surgery. If you have diabetes or are taking blood-thinning medications, you are more at risk of bleeding. Furthermore, carelessness by the patient during the recovery period may trigger wound dehiscence, which can cause bleeding.

So, what do you do when bleeding happens after breast reduction surgery? The first thing you must do is call emergency or contact your plastic surgeon and visit him as soon as possible. If prompt action is not taken, other major complications may arise. The doctor will initiate the treatment right away. He will stop the bleeding and disinfect the area if there are signs of possible infections.

The plastic surgeon will then determine the cause of the bleeding and use certain measures to restrict the bleeding. To do so, the doctor will suture and close the incisions again. If treatment is not undertaken immediately, the risk of hematoma will increase. Hematoma is a condition whereby the blood gets trapped under the skin and becomes clotted.

If the bleeding is excessive, it may create other health complications. To prevent other associated complications, you may need an intravenous blood transfusion. In case the bleeding is happening due to diabetes and seems difficult to stop, the doctor may recommend blood coagulation medications to help stop the bleeding. For instance, platelets and plasma can catalyze blood coagulation.

The doctor may also consider the use of antifibrinolytic medications and an additional surgical intervention to stop the bleeding, depending on the cause. If the bleeding is happening as a result of damaged blood vessels, this option may be used.

Keep in mind that bleeding is likely after breast reduction surgery, and you must contact your surgeon immediately if it happens. If you can’t contact your surgeon, you must call emergency service for help. If left untreated, it will not only be life-threatening but also affect the results of your surgery. Never try self-medication to treat the bleeding.
