When are the results of breast reduction surgery visible?
Breast reduction surgery is a procedure performed to relieve the patient confronted with overly large and heavy breasts from the emotional and physical discomforts associated with them. It is recommended for women who have breasts that are much bigger compared to the rest of their anatomy. Breast reduction is often the only efficient solution for the patient to get increased functionality and relief from constant pain.
When breast reduction surgery is performed, the patient is placed under general anesthesia. The duration of the procedure can be up to five hours in complex cases. After the general anesthesia is administered and the patient is asleep, the plastic surgeon will begin making the necessary incisions. The length and placement of the incisions are dependent on the amount of tissue to be removed and the other particularities of each case. Breast reduction surgery entails the removal of a part of the mammary gland and also the skin and subcutaneous fat tissue. How much mammary gland is eliminated during surgery depends on the goals the patient has. Many patients aim to achieve breasts that are a full C cup after breast reduction.
Before scheduling, the patient should know when the results of the procedure start to become visible. The initial results are obvious as soon as the patient wakes up. This is especially the case if a considerable amount of tissue was removed. Generally speaking, the larger the amount of tissue removed, the more visible the initial results immediately after the procedure. However, you should note that these are not the final results.
For the final results to become fully visible, it can take up to one year. After surgery, the breasts will be swollen and bruised for a few weeks and months. The side effects that normally occur after undergoing a surgical procedure will subside on their own without additional treatment in time. However, even after the swelling and the edema on the breasts disappear, the cicatrization process of the surgical incisions is still not complete. It can take up to 12 or 18 months for the scars to heal completely after breast reduction surgery. This means that a proper evaluation of the results is only possible one year after the surgery.
In a vast majority of cases, we can talk about the final results that are stable a year after the procedure. This is important to know as during the recovery process, the breasts change a lot. The patient can be surprised to notice that after surgery, the breasts are hard and bruised or that the incisions go through multiple stages before healing completely. This is how the recovery and healing process goes, and there is nothing to worry about.
If you are dissatisfied with the results of your breast reduction surgery, make sure to wait a year or at least six months after the procedure before seeking a second opinion or revision surgery.
