Why is breast reduction done?
While many women from all over the world dream of having bigger, rounder breasts, there are also women suffering significant emotional and physical discomforts due to the excessive size of their breasts. Overly large breasts are not always a blessing; more often they are a curse for women having to deal with them every day. Many women confronted with this issue describe it as having to wear a burden on the chest all day and all night, without ever having the possibility to put it down. The excessive size and volume of the breasts can trigger back, neck and shoulder pain that is persistent and annoying for the woman. There is little that can be done to alleviate the discomforts associated with having overly large breasts, aside from undergoing plastic surgery to correct their size.
Many people ask why breast reduction is done. Breast reduction is the procedure performed to reduce the volume of the breasts, so the patient can live a normal life and get rid of the pain associated with excessively large breasts.
The first step patients need to take is to schedule a consultation with the plastic surgeon. During this consultation, the plastic surgeon will perform a medical examination on the patient and also measurements. After the examination is over, the plastic surgeon can suggest the optimal surgical plan to be followed. Breast reduction is recommended for women of all ages who suffer from an excessive development of mammary tissue. Despite common belief, when the volume of the breasts is overly large, it is not an excess of fat tissue but glandular tissue.
When breast reduction surgery is performed, the plastic surgeon will make multiple incisions on the breasts and detach the skin tissue from the mammary gland. The surplus of glandular tissue is eliminated and the incisions are sutured again. The procedure has long-term consequences that patients should be aware of before scheduling. Among them are difficulties or the inability to breastfeed if a pregnancy occurs after the procedure. Patients are advised to carefully consider the need to undergo the procedure versus the side effects and complications that could occur.
Breast reduction is done on patients with an overdevelopment of the glandular tissue that can be caused by different factors to reduce the size and volume of the breasts and make them more proportional to the rest of the body. The procedure often takes no longer than two hours, and the reduction in size is visible immediately after the surgery; however, the final results can take months to transpire. Afterwards, the breasts will be swollen and bruised and the patients can experience pain and discomfort for a few days and up to a week.
