Gynecomastia is a body aesthetic problem many men experience during their lives. The condition happens as a result of multiple factors, including lifestyle and medical issues. When the male breasts enlarge, it can be embarrassing for the patient, as the condition makes them look feminine. Having prominent breasts is a feminine feature, which is why men with enlarged breasts experience self-esteem issues. The good news is that the field of plastic surgery is vast and there are solutions available to treat most types of aesthetic problems.
The most effective treatment for gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery. If your breasts have enlarged and the condition is affecting your quality of life, male breast reduction can treat the condition and restore your self-esteem. If an experienced plastic surgeon operates, you can get back your masculine appearance.
Many patients wonder why the breasts become large in men. There are certain factors that trigger the development of large breasts in men. These include genetics, the use of specific drugs, hormonal imbalances, and weight gain. Many men have a genetic tendency to get prominent and feminine breasts. For example, if your grandfather or father had a feminine chest, there is a risk you may also develop such a chest at some point in your life.
Furthermore, the use of medicines like steroids and hormones can trigger the growth of prominent breasts. Also, the breasts can become large when your body experiences hormonal changes or when you gain considerable weight. When you gain weight, it leads to the deposition of more fat in your breasts. Hence, the breasts become large and make you look feminine.
According to one study, about 50 percent of men in the US suffer from the condition at some point in their lives. The condition can affect men of any age and lead to emotional and self-esteem issues. Fortunately, no matter what has caused the condition and at what age you have experienced it, male breast reduction surgery can treat it effectively.
Many people think weight loss can decrease breast size. The fact is that weight loss may help reduce your breasts to some extent if the cause of the condition is weight gain or excess fat deposits in the breasts. However, if there is excess glandular tissue in the breasts, weight loss will not help treat the condition.
Male breast reduction is the only effective, reliable, tested, and proven intervention that can treat enlarged male breasts. The results are consistent and more sustainable. After the surgery, you will notice that your breasts have drastically reduced in size and you look more masculine. You will experience a boost in self-confidence and have positive thoughts about yourself.
If you are a male who has developed large breasts that make you look feminine and the condition is affecting your life in negative ways, you may consider going under the knife to treat the problem. To achieve your aesthetic goals, you must choose only a board-certified and highly experienced plastic surgeon to undertake the intervention. Keep in mind that male breast reduction is an invasive and risky surgery. A trusted plastic surgeon will deliver dramatic aesthetic results with as little scarring as possible.
After choosing a good plastic surgeon, consultation is the first step to know your candidacy for the procedure. The plastic surgeon will examine your chest, assess your health, and know your goals to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. The doctor may also ask you to get some medical tests before the procedure. If you are a smoker, you will be advised to stop smoking at least two weeks ahead of the surgery.
If you turn out to be a good candidate for male breast reduction, the plastic surgeon will give you a surgery date. The surgery normally takes a maximum of two hours to complete. Also known as reduction mammoplasty, the intervention contours the male breast by making it flatter and look masculine. Depending on how large your breasts have become, the surgery may involve liposuction, tissue excision, or a combo of both. The surgery targets the area under the nipple-areolar complex.
Keep in mind that what happens during the surgery and what techniques are used differs from one case to another. However, in most cases, removal of the excess fat from the chest becomes necessary to reduce the size of the breasts. The plastic surgeon will first assess your case and the come up with a course of action for you.
If your breasts have enlarged because of excess glandular tissue in your breasts, the surgeon may recommend removing the excess glandular tissue. In some cases, it may be necessary to reposition the areolas so that you can look more masculine.
The surgery is performed under anesthesia. You should discuss your anesthesia option with the plastic surgeon during the pre-operative consultation. The surgery can be performed under general anesthesia and IV sedation combined with local anesthesia. Depending on how comfortable you want to remain during the surgery and your medical history, the plastic surgeon will recommend one of these two anesthesia options.
If your breasts have enlarged primarily due to the deposition of excess fat in your chest, liposuction alone may be enough to deliver effective and noticeable improvements. Liposuction involves tiny incisions on the chest, through which the plastic surgeon will insert the cannula into the chest. The doctor will move the cannula back and forth to dislodge the fat cells within the chest. During the process, a tumescent solution will also be introduced into the area. After releasing the fat, the surgeon will remove the fat from the area by connecting a suction pump to the liposuction cannula.
On the other hand, modern liposuction techniques like laser-assisted liposuction and ultrasound-assisted liposuction are more effective and involve fewer trauma and scarring. These techniques use laser beams and ultrasound waves to melt the fat within the target area before removing it.
In case you are suffering from a severe form of gynecomastia whereby your breasts have excess fat deposits in addition to excess glandular tissue and saggy breast skin, you may need tissue excision. Here, the plastic surgeon will use specialized surgical and excisional techniques to contour the breasts and enhance your areolas, nipples, and chest contour. The plastic surgeon will start this intervention by making incisions on your chest. The length and number of incisions depend on the severity of the condition.
After making the incisions, the plastic surgeon will use certain excisional techniques to remove the excess glandular tissue from the breasts. In the next step, the doctor will use liposuction to remove the excess fat from your breasts. After removing the excess fat and tissue, the surgeon will reposition the nipple-areolas complex if necessary. In the last step, the plastic surgeon will remove the excess fat from the breasts.
In the last step, the plastic surgeon will suture and close the incisions. Temporary drain tubes may also be used to prevent seroma and hematoma. After the surgery, the patient will be shifted to a recovery area. Your post-operative recovery will start immediately after the operation. Unlike female breast reduction that is highly traumatic, male breast reduction is relatively less invasive. As such, the recovery period is not as long as female breast reduction.
The primary recovery will happen during the first two or three days of the surgery. Complete recovery will take 2-3 weeks. You can resume work after three days if your work does not involve physically strenuous activities. You must avoid physically demanding activities for 3-4 weeks following the operation. Be sure to follow the surgeon’s instructions to the letter.
You may see some improvements in your chest right after the surgery; however, complete outcomes of the surgery will take time to become visible. You will notice the full results when the post-surgery swelling subsides and the incisions fully heal. The final results will emerge in the form of a flat and masculine chest. These aesthetic improvements will restore your self-esteem and improve your quality of life.
Male breast reduction is a common and popular plastic surgery procedure in the US. Many men develop prominent and large breasts, making them look more feminine than masculine. As a result, patients experience many problems, including embarrassment and self-esteem issues. The good news is that male breast reduction can fix the condition effectively. The procedure involves removal of the excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts. The steps of the surgery have been explained in detail above. During the pre-operative consultation, be sure to ask the surgeon what the procedure involves, the risks, and the expected results of male breast reduction.
