Options for breast reduction

Options for breast reduction

Introduction

Excessively large breasts can create physical and emotional pain for women because they come with added weight and affect your overall aesthetic appearance. Different factors can trigger the development of huge breasts. These include genetics, massive weight gain, and the use of certain medicines. When the breasts become huge, the patient usually experiences pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. This condition can also affect the patient’s self-esteem.

Breast reduction is a plastic surgery procedure that is meant to treat huge breasts and remove the associated symptoms. Which option is suitable for you depends on what has caused your breasts to become huge and how large the breasts are. A plastic surgeon will examine your breasts and recommend you a proper course of action.

Development of excessively large breasts

The growth of overly large breasts is a condition that affects many women in the United States. This problem can affect random women, but it has been found that it happens mainly during puberty, pregnancy, or as a result of the use of certain drugs. When the condition occurs during adolescence, the leading cause is genetic predominance.

The breasts usually become huge over the course of many years, but there have been a few cases whereby the breasts of the patient grew fairly quickly and became huge within a few months. When the breasts become huge, they not only look aesthetically unpleasant and affect the patient’s body outline but also trigger pain in different localized areas of the body, such as the breast itself, the neck, shoulders, and back.

It can also affect your physical movements. Most patients with overly developed breasts avoid social gatherings or mingling with other people. They also experience difficulty performing physical activity. The condition can also affect your posture over time. For example, you may find it difficult to stand or walk with a proper posture. This occurs due to the excessive weight of the breasts.

If your breasts have become excessively large and the condition is affecting your quality of life, you may consider getting a breast reduction surgery. To obtain satisfactory results, you must consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon having extensive experience in the procedure.

The plastic surgeon will examine your breasts and ask you whether you are experiencing emotional and physical discomforts. The doctor will also check your medical and family history to find the cause of the condition. He will also measure your breast dimensions and ask what improvements you expect to achieve.

The plastic surgeon will then tell you whether you are a good candidate for the surgery. If you are a good candidate, the doctor will recommend you one of the two options for breast reduction: liposuction or tissue excision. Now let me explain how both of these options work.

Liposuction for breast reduction

Liposuction is primarily meant to contour the localized areas of the body, such as the abdomen, sides, flanks, etc. It can effectively remove stubborn fat pockets from the target areas, making those areas shapelier and aesthetically welcoming. However, liposuction can also be used to reduce huge breasts. Whether you are a good candidate for breast reduction with liposuction depends on the factor that has caused your breasts to become large.

If the plastic surgeon determines that your breasts have become huge primarily due to excess fat, then you may be a good candidate for this breast reduction method. The surgery is performed under IV sedation with local anesthesia. It can also be performed under general anesthesia if the patient wants to remain fully asleep during the operation.

The plastic surgeon will start the operation by making tiny incisions on the breasts. The incisions will be placed in areas of the breasts where the resulting scars can be hidden and camouflaged. After the incisions are made, the surgeon will insert a hollow tube called a cannula inside the target area through the incision. A tumescent solution will also be introduced into the area so that the fat can be easily removed.

The surgeon will then move the cannula in a back and forth motion, which will help remove the fat from the surrounding tissue. In the next step, the doctor will use a suction pump or a syringe to remove the fat from the breast. The incision is then sutured and closed. The same process is then repeated on all target areas of both breasts until the breast size has decreased.

Some of the results will be immediately noticeable after the procedure. However, complete results will transpire after many weeks or even months. Your breasts will swell after the surgery. This is normal. The post-operative swelling will slowly subside, letting the results be prominent.

When the results emerge, you will see that your breasts have decreased in size. The physical pain resulting from enormous breasts will also be alleviated or eliminated. As a result, your breasts will appear aesthetically pleasant, and you will notice improvements in different aspects of your life. You will feel more confident and be able to mingle with people. Furthermore, your posture will also improve and you will be more active.

To retain the improvements achieved with this procedure, you must follow the surgeon’s instructions and avoid weight gain. Keep in mind that when you gain weight, the existing fat cells in your breasts will expand and give rise to more fat cells. As a result, your breasts may become huge again.

Skin, fat, and tissue removal

The second option to reduce excessively large breasts involves removal of the excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin from the breasts. This option is recommended for patients who have developed huge breasts as a result of excess epithelial tissue and fat. If the prime reason for the huge breasts is excess glandular tissue, then the plastic surgeon may recommend you this option.

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia because it is highly invasive and involves tissue excision. A board-certified anesthesiologist will administer the general anesthesia, after which you will go to sleep and not remember anything about the surgery. You will not feel any pain or discomforts, nor will you make any movements during the operation.

The plastic surgeon will begin by making incisions on your breasts. The length of the incisions will be longer compared to the liposuction method. After making the incisions, the plastic surgeon will access the glandular tissue through the incisions and then carefully remove the excess tissue. After removing the excess glands, the surgeon will then remove the excess fat from the breasts. The amount of fat and gland that needs to be removed during the surgery will be determined during the pre-operative consultation.

After removing the fat and tissue, your breasts will decrease in size. However, as a side effect, you will get excess skin on the breasts as a result of the vacuum created by the removal of excess fat and tissue. If this skin is not excised, your breasts will become saggy after the procedure. To prevent saggy breasts, the plastic surgeon will extract the excess skin from the breasts. After the skin has been removed, the surgeon will re-drape the remaining skin. He will then place sutures on the breasts and close the incisions.

The doctor will then repeat the same process on the second breast. During this operation, it is critical for the surgeon to achieve breast symmetry. The breasts must be balanced and equal in size after the procedure. This calls for attention to detail and strong judgment.

The results will not be visible right after the procedure because your breasts will be swollen and bruised. The incisions will heal over the next several weeks. The swelling will take more time to disappear. In most cases, it takes many months for the swelling to vanish. When the incisions heal and the swelling dissipates, you will notice the improvements in your breasts.

The results will transpire in the form of reduced breasts and alleviation or elimination of the physical and emotional pain linked with overly developed breasts. Again, to enjoy the benefits on a long terms basis, you must avoid excessive weight gain after the surgery.

Conclusion

The breasts are among the most critical assets of women. While many women desire to have bigger breasts, they can create physical and emotional discomforts for the patient when the breasts become overly large. Breast reduction surgery effectively reduces the size and weight of the breasts, removing the physical and emotional problems linked with having excessively large breasts. There are two options to reduce the breasts that I have explained in this article. The plastic surgeon will examine your breasts and know your goals to recommend you the liposuction or tissue excision option.
