When is breast revision surgery necessary?

A vast majority of patients undergoing a breast enhancement procedure are happy with the results achieved and don’t need additional procedures for the rest of their lives. However, there are also patients who think they just need one simple procedure to improve the appearance of their breasts and end up having 5, 10, 15 procedures performed to correct or enhance their breasts. Is it good or bad? Well, it actually depends on whether there was a medical indication for the revision surgeries that were performed.

1. Unsatisfactory results after the initial breast enhancement procedure

There are multiple causes that can trigger unsatisfactory results, and probably the most frequent ones are a lack of proper communication with the plastic surgeon or choosing a doctor that is not very experienced or talented. Plastic surgery is not only a question of skills or knowledge that you acquire reading a medical book. Plastic surgery is also art as it deals with body aesthetics, and not all doctors that are good with a scalpel are artists. It also takes a certain amount of experience to recommend the best implants to be used for breast augmentation or when and how much to cut during a breast reduction. If the doctor you have chosen only performs your procedure a few times a year, chances are you will not be satisfied with the results. Of course you could be lucky, but why count on luck when there are things you can actually do to ensure good results?

Unsatisfactory results after the breast augmentation procedure that can deem revision surgery as necessary are:

– Breast asymmetries, meaning one breast is visibly bigger than the other, nipples are different, and even the position on the chest wall can be asymmetric;

– Uniboob is unfortunately still a potential unsatisfactory result. This occurs when there is no clear demarcation between the two breasts, and they are connected by skin tissue.

– Implants are positioned in different areas, causing the breasts to look deformed.

– Breast implants used to correct severe breast ptosis, only making the sagginess worse.

Time and again we have stressed that no surgical procedure is without risks, including ones performed for aesthetic purposes only. This means that unsatisfactory results after the procedure are a risk each patient needs to accept.

If you want to significantly increase your chances of achieving good results after the procedure, make sure to choose a board-certified and highly experienced plastic surgeon that performs the procedure routinely. He is more prepared to deal with potential complications and also to create superior aesthetic results compared to someone who lacks the experience.

Breast revision surgery is necessary in all the cases we mentioned before and should be performed as soon as possible. Just make sure to wait until the results are final and you are completely recovered from the first procedure.

2. Complications after the initial breast enhancement procedure

If there are certain risks that can be avoided when choosing an experienced plastic surgeon, you need to understand that complications can still occur. Among the complications that would require a breast revision surgery are deep tissue infection and capsular contracture.

When it comes to the infection, things are pretty simple and easy to diagnose, even for the patient. When this happens, there will be high fever, pus coming from the incision site, and a certain level of inflammation and redness. At the same time, the breast can be swollen and very painful compared to the other one. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible as infections can be life-threatening if not treated in time. During an infection of the surgical wound, chances are a revision surgery won’t be needed. But a deep tissue infection would certainly create the premises for a breast revision.

Capsular contracture occurs when implants are used to increase the size of the breasts. It is a very specific complication that only occurs in rare cases nowadays. What happens is that the implant is isolated from the surrounding tissues by a fibrous tissue created by the body. The pockets in which the implant is inserted are covered with this fibrous tissue. This is why your plastic surgeon will recommend massages to help the implants settle and descend on the chest wall. When this fibrous tissue hardens and becomes very thick, it can cause breast deformation and even pain. Once again, it is not difficult to diagnose the effects of capsular contracture, and you will need to see your plastic surgeon for an intervention that will correct it.

3. Breasts are too big or too small

The plastic surgeon can offer an indication of how the augmented or reduced breasts will look after surgery, but the patient will fully understand this only when the final results have settled. This means that the patient can notice that her breasts are too small or too big compared with her expectations. This creates the need for revision surgery.

Conclusion

There are several cases when revision surgery is needed. If the patient underwent a breast enhancement procedure with the purpose to reduce or increase the size of the breasts and noticed that the breasts were either too small or too big, a revision surgery might be recommended. Moreover, asymmetries, synmastia, and breast sagginess can occur as a result or become accentuated after a breast enhancement procedure. These results are usually achieved when an inexperienced doctor is carrying out the procedure. Certain complications such as capsular contracture or infections can deem revision surgery necessary as well.
