Not getting the expected results after breast reduction

When it comes to resorting to plastic surgery, there are a few risks that patients should consider before scheduling their procedure. Aside from the risks associated with any type of surgical procedures such as the risk of excessive bleeding, the risk of developing a blood clot, the risk of infection among others, there is always the risk of not getting the expected results.

Achieving results that are not entirely satisfactory after breast reduction surgery can happen due to different causes. First is the patient’s inability to explain to the plastic surgeon what desires are expected. The patient should discuss her expectations and goals from the surgery in detail during the pre-operative consultation. Moreover, it is the patient’s responsibility to make sure that the plastic surgeon has understood what you want to achieve. Otherwise, you might end up with results that would make other patients happy, but not you.

During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will perform certain measurements and depending on them he will recommend a certain volume for the breasts. This means that your breasts can go from an E cup to a C cup. Make sure to find out exactly the results expected in terms of volume.

However, the results of breast reduction surgery are not only about the volume of the breasts but also their shape and position on the chest wall. It is important for patients to understand that the position of the breasts on the chest wall will be different after breast reduction surgery. During surgery, the surgeon will correct the ptosis that is often associated with overly large breasts, hence the breasts will be elevated on the chest wall.

Some patients tend to believe that their breasts are too high on the chest wall and looking a bit unnatural. This is normal after breast reduction surgery, especially if you are trying to assess the results in the early days. Keep in mind that the breasts will be swollen and bruised immediately after the surgery and it will take at least a few weeks for these side effects to disappear. Only then can the final results be evaluated. For some patients, it can take a while to get used to the elevated position of the breasts on the chest wall, especially if they have struggled their entire life with breast ptosis.

As for the shape of the breasts, it is essential for patients to understand that it is completely dependent on the initial shape of the breasts. This means that if you want to achieve breasts that have that upper pole fullness we see in glossy magazines on models and celebrities, chances are you need implants inserted when you have your breast reduction. Breast reduction alone won’t help you achieve the shape of the breasts that you desire unless you aim for a natural shape, close to what you have had before the procedure.
